Event Details

KQED's Bay Area Mosaic Project in partnership with the Respect for All Project and Ally Action, presents an evening of film, conversation and education in celebration of LGBT Pride Month

A FREE screening of It's Elementary

It's Elementary is the first film of it's kind to address anti-gay prejudice by providing adults with practical lessons on how to talk with kids about gay people.  Hailed as a "model of intelligent directing," It's Elementary shows that children are eager and able to wrestle with stereotypes and absorb new facts about what it means to be gay or lesbian.  Since it aired on more tha 100 public television stations in 1999, It's Elementary has fueled a growing movement of educators and parents gay and straight alike who are committed to preventing pervasive homophobia and anti-gay violence.  The film shows what happens when kids in kindergarten through eighth grade discuss lesbian- and gay-related topics in age-appropriate ways.  Shot in six public and private schools, It's Elementary models excellent teaching about family diversity, stereotypes, community building and more.

Panel discussion to follow featuring:

  • Mike Courville, National Program Director, Respect for All Project
  • Andrea Fazell, Program Director, Ally Action
  • Peter Simack, Principal, Marchus School in Concord
  • Mayela Zuniga, Youth Leader, Ally Action

KQED School Services presents its ongoing series, Bay Area Mosaic, a project designed to help teachers integrate ethnic studies and diversity content into the standardized curriculum.  Mosaic presents this content by utilizing PBS and KQED films to enhance learning and teaching, with an emphasis in social studies and language arts.

The Respect For All Project (RFAP) seeks to create safe, hate-free schools and communities.  The Project provides youth and the adults who guide their development the tools they need to engage in age-appropriate discussions about human difference, preventing prejudice and building caring communities. The Project offers a comprehensive set of resources for educators and youth-service providers, including films, curriuclum guides and a workshop series for professionals and community members.

Ally Action is a time honored safe schools organization, we provide comprehensive approaches to eliminating anti-LGBT bias and violence in local school communities.  We do this by offering training, resources and on-going services that engage local school community members to make a positive difference in each other's lives.
